For its 18th edition, the Maxi-Rires Festival once again took over Champéry, bringing together renowned artists and thousands of spectators for a lineup featuring stand-up comedy, music, and hybrid performances.
For this must-see comedy event in French-speaking Switzerland, Skynight handled all technical services, including sound, lighting, and stage management. It was a demanding project centered on one key challenge: transforming a gymnasium into a full-fledged performance venue capable of meeting the standards of live entertainment.
An unconventional venue to be adapted for live performances
Choosing the venue is one of the main technical challenges of this type of event. By definition, a sports arena is not designed to host performances: large spaces, reflective surfaces, and the absence of permanent stage equipment—all of which are constraints that must be taken into account from the design phase onward.
In this context, several objectives must be achieved simultaneously. The goal is to ensure excellent speech intelligibility—which is essential for a comedy festival—while creating a truly immersive visual experience for the audience. The layout of the stage space therefore becomes a key element, both in guiding the audience’s gaze and in organizing the sound distribution.
The challenge is not merely technical: it is about transforming the perception of the space, so that its original purpose is forgotten in favor of an experience fully dedicated to the performance.
A technical setup designed for a multi-format festival
The Maxi-Rires Festival stands out for the diversity of its lineup. Stand-up comedy, music, magic: each performance has its own technical requirements, both in terms of sound and lighting.
This variety requires a high degree of adaptability. The setups must be able to change quickly between each performance, without any disruption to the audience. Transitions must be seamless, the lighting levels consistent, and the visual atmosphere adjusted in real time.
The entire setup is therefore designed as a cohesive system, in which each element—sound, lighting, and production—works together seamlessly. The goal is to ensure a consistent experience throughout the festival, despite the variety of formats.
Sound: Ensuring clarity and consistency in a complex environment
At a comedy festival, sound quality is crucial. Even the slightest loss of intelligibility can hinder audience understanding and diminish the impact of the performances.
Given the venue’s acoustic constraints, the sound system was designed to provide even and controlled coverage. The goal is to ensure clear voice reproduction, regardless of where the audience is seated.
Deployed broadcasting system
The system is based on a comprehensive setup tailored to the room’s dimensions and the audience layout:
- Hands: 8 x Meyer Leopard
- Subwoofers: 5 x Meyer 2100 LFC
- Infill: 2 x 3 Meyer Lina
- Sidefill: 2 x 4 Meyer Lina
- Output: 2 x Ultra X40
This design effectively covers the entire space while ensuring consistent sound quality across the different areas.
Signal Control and Management
The control room is based on a Yamaha DM7 console paired with a Rio D2 system, ensuring precise signal management and great operational flexibility.
Axient Digital HF links ensure reliable wireless transmission, while the Freespeak intercom system facilitates communication among technical teams throughout the event.
Lighting: Shaping the Space and Enhancing Performances
Beyond its functional aspect, lighting plays a vital role in how the performance is perceived. It helps structure the space, highlight the performers, and create atmospheres tailored to each performance.
As part of the Maxi-Rires Festival, the lighting design was conceived to accommodate a variety of formats, ranging from intimate stand-up comedy to more dynamic performances. The goal: to ensure the stage is clearly visible while providing a cohesive visual experience.
Light Park
The deployed system includes:
- 5 Ayrton Rivale
- 25 Martin Mac Aura XB
- 21 Ayrton Diablo S
- 12 Briteq LED Blinders
- 12-LED Astera QuikPunch
This range combines power, precision, and flexibility, with options that can be tailored to each artist’s needs.
Steering
The entire system is controlled via a GrandMA3 Light, connected via a Gigacore network, ensuring smooth and responsive lighting control throughout the festival.
Smooth operation over several days
Beyond the setup, the success of an event of this scale depends on the quality of its execution.
A multi-day program requires close coordination between the technical teams, the artists, and the organizers. Each day calls for adjustments, testing, and constant attention to detail.
The ability to anticipate, adapt, and maintain a high level of performance over time is essential to ensuring that the event runs smoothly.
An approach focused on the performance
At Skynight, technology is first and foremost a tool to enhance the show. The goal isn’t to pile on the effects, but to strike the right balance.
This means adapting to the artists, respecting the flow of the performances, and prioritizing clarity. Every technical decision is guided by a simple question: Does it help enhance the audience’s experience?
At a comedy festival, this approach really comes into its own. The technical aspects should support the performance, without ever overshadowing it.
Maxi-Rires Festival: A Community Project
An event like the Maxi-Rires Festival relies on close collaboration among many different stakeholders. Organizers, performers, and technical crews—everyone contributes to the overall success of the project.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the organizers for their continued trust, as well as to all the teams involved in this year’s event.
