Since 1969, Visions du Réel has established itself as one of the leading international festivals dedicated to documentary film and cinéma du réel. Every year, the event transforms the city of Nyon into a vibrant hub where filmmakers, artists, industry professionals, and passionate audiences from around the world come together.
For its 57th edition, the festival has once again demonstrated its international reach with an ambitious lineup featuring 164 films from 75 countries, including 83 world premieres. For ten days, screenings, discussions, conferences, meet-and-greets, and evening events took place one after another at various iconic venues throughout the city.
For the past three years, SKYNIGHT has been supporting Visions du Réel with all its audiovisual needs. From sound, lighting, and video to structures, rigging, stages, and party areas, our teams work on a particularly demanding project spread across multiple sites simultaneously.
The 2026 edition once again presented a major technical and logistical challenge, with one constant priority: ensuring a seamless and immersive experience for spectators, participants, and organizers.
An audiovisual setup spread across several strategic locations
One of the distinctive features of Visions du Réel is its multi-site format. Unlike an event centralized in a single location, the festival spans various screening and meeting spaces scattered throughout the city of Nyon.
For SKYNIGHT, this requires particularly meticulous technical planning to ensure a consistent experience throughout the festival.
Theater auditoriums equipped with Dolby 5.1
Our teams provided the audiovisual equipment for five of the festival’s at the festival:
- the Nyon Community Hall;
- the Marens Theater;
- Room 1 at the Usine à Gaz;
- Room 2 at the Usine à Gaz;
- as well as the Le Capitole cinema in Nyon and its two additional screens.
In each of these setups, the goal was to deliver sound reproduction that met the standards of contemporary documentary filmmaking. To achieve this, several complete MEYERSOUND systems in Dolby 5.1 were deployed to provide a consistent, precise, and perfectly tailored sound experience for the various types of theaters.
Beyond audio quality, each installation also required significant structural work, mounting, and technical integration to optimize the placement of equipment while adhering to the architectural constraints specific to each venue.
Completely transformed conference and meeting spaces
Visions du Réel is not limited to screenings. The festival is also a space for discussion, reflection, and knowledge-sharing about documentary film.
In addition to the screening rooms, SKYNIGHT also worked on several venues dedicated to conferences, masterclasses and professional networking events :
- the Lake Geneva Museum;
- the Grande Salle at La Colombière;
- as well as the three annexes at La Colombière.
These spaces have been fully equipped to host panel discussions, presentations, interviews, and meet-and-greets with filmmakers and industry professionals.
At each site, our teams installed:
- broadcast screens;
- appropriate sound systems;
- additional ambient lighting;
- stage lighting for public events.
The goal was twofold: to ensure optimal comfort for the audience while creating welcoming spaces that reflected the festival’s identity.
During the final days of the event, the Grande Salle de la Colombière underwent a complete transformation to host the gala organized for one of the festival’s major partners: La Mobilière.
Transform Place du Réel into a true nightlife hub
Beyond the screening rooms and conference spaces, Visions du Réel also comes to life through its outdoor gathering spots. Throughout the festival, Rue des Marchandises becomes the famous “Place du Réel,” a central space where festivalgoers, film crews, industry professionals, and visitors gather between screenings.
This section includes, among other things:
- reception and ticket office;
- the festival restaurant;
- the bar;
- as well as the large terrace and its pergola.
For SKYNIGHT, this area presented a unique challenge: to create an atmosphere that could evolve throughout the day and night, while ensuring safety, comfort, and visual consistency.
Our teams have therefore designed a diffuse and immersive lighting design to naturally complement the festival’s various events. The lighting had to remain soft enough to preserve the venue’s welcoming atmosphere, while giving the entire Place du Réel a distinct visual identity.
String lights, architectural lighting, facade lighting, pathway lighting, and additional lighting under the pergola transformed this urban space into a vibrant nightlife hub at the heart of the festival.
A dynamic stage design that continues late into the night
As night falls, the atmosphere gradually shifts. The festival bar then transforms into a lively venue capable of hosting DJ sets and parties organized throughout the event.
This change requires a technical approach that is completely different from the one used during the day. The SKYNIGHT teams have therefore deployed:
- a sound system designed to provide background music;
- a complete DJ kit;
- several dynamic lighting displays;
- as well as immersive video installations.
Among the most prominent features were the video totems consisting of three 55-inch screens stacked vertically. These displays were used to broadcast visual content, animations, and graphic designs to extend the festival’s visual identity into the party areas.
The ability to adapt a single space to different uses and schedules is one of the key challenges of this type of multi-site event. Within a few hours, a dining and social area must be able to transform into a nightlife venue while remaining accessible and functional for the public.
A complex logistical operation involving several teams over a period of nearly three weeks
Behind the festival-goers’ experience lies a highly complex organizational effort. The simultaneous management of multiple sites, various types of spaces, and very different uses requires constant technical coordination.
For the 2026 edition, the project involved:
- 12 full days of editing;
- 10 days of operation;
- 3 days of dismantling;
- with nearly 10 technicians working on-site every day during the installation phases.
Throughout the festival, three SKYNIGHT technicians were also on hand to ensure:
- monitoring of projections;
- technical adjustments;
- real-time interventions;
- as well as support for the festival’s various highlights.
A large-scale deployment of audiovisual equipment throughout the festival
To meet the technical requirements of Visions du Réel 2026, SKYNIGHT deployed a substantial amount of equipment across all festival venues.
Sound
The sound system was based primarily on several complete MEYERSOUND systems configured in Dolby 5.1. The equipment used included:
- LINA speakers;
- the ULTRA X40;
- the ULTRA X20;
- 750 LFC subwoofers;
- as well as the 1100 LFCs.
These configurations made it possible to achieve precise and consistent sound reproduction, which was essential for film screenings where every audio detail contributes to the viewer’s immersion.
Video
Video video, nearly 30 55-inch TV screens were installed throughout the festival grounds. They were used for broadcasting information, providing visual branding for the venues, hosting conferences, and creating scenic installations in the festival areas.
Light
Lighting was also a key component of the project. The teams installed a wide variety of fixtures:
- dichroic rails;
- BY LED;
- LED spotlights;
- LED strips;
- mood lighting;
- stage lighting.
The goal was not merely functional. Each space was designed to have its own visual identity while maintaining an overall consistency with the festival’s overall theme.
Structure & Rigging
Finally, the entire project also relied on a significant amount of structural and rigging to ensure all equipment was seamlessly integrated into the various venues. Mounting structures, technical supports, positioning of audio and video systems, and the installation of stages and bleachers were all integral parts of the setup deployed by SKYNIGHT.
Technical expertise dedicated to enhancing the viewer experience
At a festival like Visions du Réel, the technical aspects should remain in the background. Behind every screening, every conference, and every evening event, the goal remains the same: to allow the audience to enjoy a smooth, immersive, and comfortable experience.
It is precisely for this reason that SKYNIGHT has been supporting the festival for the past three years. Each project is designed to adapt to the venue’s constraints, the intended uses, and the experience the organizers are seeking to create.
In screening rooms, this means ensuring impeccable sound quality and perfect clarity of content. In meeting spaces, this involves creating welcoming environments that encourage interaction and discussion. In outdoor spaces, the challenge becomes more about creating an atmosphere: transforming a thoroughfare into a true space for living and socializing.
This diversity of environments perfectly illustrates the versatility required for this type of multi-site cultural project. Teams must be able to switch from a cinema-focused approach to an event-focused one, and then to a festive atmosphere, all while maintaining a consistently high standard.
Beyond the technical aspects, this project also reflects the importance of collaborative effort between organizers, partners, and on-site teams. A festival of this scale relies on constant coordination among the various stakeholders to ensure overall consistency throughout the event.
