From April 25 to May 2, 2026, Geneva hosted the ACE & Company World Mixed Doubles and Senior Curling Championships at the Centre Sportif Sous-Moulin. This major international event brought together more than 300 athletes from 36 countries, making Switzerland a global hub for curling for over a week.
For this event, SKYNIGHT was commissioned to provide the complete lighting for the ice rink at the Trois-Chêne in Thônex. This was a technically demanding project, carried out for the second time following a successful collaboration during the 2022 edition.
An international event in the heart of Geneva
The World Mixed Doubles and Senior Curling Championships are a highlight of the international sporting calendar. This competition brings together the world’s top teams in an atmosphere that combines athletic performance, international broadcasts, and a warm welcome for spectators.
The Sous-Moulin Sports Center provided an ideal setting for this event, with its dedicated curling facilities and its ability to host both the senior and elite mixed doubles competitions simultaneously.
In addition to the matches, the event also featured a fan zone, food courts, and a program of activities, allowing the public to fully enjoy the international curling experience in Geneva.
For SKYNIGHT, participating in an event like this means meeting high technical standards, particularly in the area of sports lighting for television.
Lighting designed for international TV broadcasts
One of the main challenges of this project was to ensure uniform illumination of 1,500 lux across all the ice rinks. This specific requirement was mandated by World Curling International TV to ensure optimal conditions for filming and broadcasting matches internationally.
In an environment as unique as a curling rink, lighting must be precise, uniform, and perfectly controlled to avoid shadows or variations in brightness that could affect the quality of the broadcast images.
The SKYNIGHT team designed a rigging and lighting solution tailored to the venue’s specific requirements while adhering to the international standards set by the organization.
Safety was also a key concern. Structures, suspended loads, and lifting systems had to comply with current international standards, particularly regarding the types of hoists used and installation methods.
Installation completed prior to ice treatment
The project’s technical schedule imposed an additional constraint: all structures, hoists, and floodlights had to be installed before the final treatment of the rink’s ice.
This phase required close coordination among the various technical teams to meet deadlines while ensuring a safe and fully operational installation before the start of the competitions.
Four specialized technicians were involved in setting up the rigging, while three technicians were assigned to the lighting installation. Taking the setup down then required seven people to quickly and efficiently remove the entire setup at the end of the event.
This organization underscores the importance of preparation and coordination in international sporting events, where every technical step must be executed with precision.
Technical resources tailored to the event’s requirements
To meet the expectations of the competition and international broadcasters, SKYNIGHT has installed a comprehensive technical system throughout the arena.
- Forty-four CHROMATIC Boston floodlights were installed to ensure even lighting across the various curling rinks.
- More than 250 meters of aluminum beams were used to construct the suspended structures required for the lighting installation.
- About twenty electric hoists were used to safely install the overhead structures in accordance with international standards.
- An Avolites Titan Quartz lighting console was used to manage and control the lighting.
- The SONOSS RF remote control system for hoists has helped optimize lifting and installation operations.
The entire system was designed to provide technical performance, safety, and operational flexibility throughout the competition.
